Dreams
Who were (are) your heroes? In my pre-teen years, mine were everyone on the New York Yankees - Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Yogi Berra. JFK. In my teen years, mine were The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Michelle Phillips and Gracie (wink), and practically everyone in the rock scene. They could do no wrong.
In my early adult years, my heroes were Ted Simon, Colin Fletcher, Jesus, Krishna Das, Leonard Cohen, and Ravi Shankar. Ok, can't leave out Joni. Heroes shape your personal dreams - who you want to be like. What do you want to do in life?
This is where you, the reader, comes in. If you are interested in adventure, the Granddaddy of motorcycle adventure is Ted Simon. A British journalist who rode his Triumph motorcycle around the world as documented in the must read classic book Jupiter's Travels. Another must read adventure book, however it is unrelated to motorcycles, is The Man Who Walked Through Time by Colin Fletcher. Fletcher was the first person to walk a continuous route through the Grand Canyon.
Additional reading and viewing materials:
A more recent motorcycle adventure book is Investment Biker by Jim Rogers. Rogers made millions in the investment world - he put himself at risk to fill a spiritual void that no amount of money could satisfy.
The television series Long Way Around and Long Way Down chronicle the motorcycle adventures of actors Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman riding from England to New York the long way around, and from Scotland to Cape Town South Africa the long way down. Have patience in the beginning episodes of trip preparation, you will be rewarded.
You can see that my adventure is small potatoes compared with the above-listed accomplishments. But, like I said in the last post, even getting on a motorcycle for the first time to ride around the block is every bit an adventure. What are your dreams? Who are your heroes? Go at your own pace.
