The Real World: Memphis, TN to Stillwater, OK

I-40 from Memphis to Ft. Smith, AR.  Continue on I-40 W through eastern Oklahoma to Muskogee Turnpike (Hwy 51), Broken Arrow Expressway, I-244 to Sand Springs Expressway, Cimarran Turnpike, Hwy 177 S to Stillwater, OK.

It was hard to leave Memphis, but Theresa at the Westin served me a good breakfast and was interested in my ride.  She and her husband are retired military and moved to Memphis about 10 years ago.  I love meeting people from the real world.

Crossing over the Mississippi River is awesome.  The river has generated many legends of old.  Seemed like it was a mile wide with massive amounts of water destroying everything in its path.  Thus, my introduction to the State of Arkansas.

I have never seen more truck traffic in my life on I-40.  I thought that I would see little traffic, but I was wrong.  A semi had overturned and eastbound traffic was backed up for 10 miles.  Once past Little Rock, traffic thinned out.

Nothing remarkable about the geography before Little Rock.  Actually, the most beautiful area in the state (from the freeway) is at the far western part of the state near the Ozarks.  Big sweeping hills and vista's.

I passed a sign reading "Organic Food at Squash Blossom - Exit 1"  It was lunch time, so I thought that this placed sounded perfect.  Pulled off Exit 1 - nothing there except a Pentecostal Church and a sign reading I-40 entrance.  I though I missed the Squash Blossom.  But, looking up, the only other building was the Squash Blossom.  It was not a restaurant, but they had tabouli salad and cheese with Kamchatka.  So, I sat on a weathered bench on the porch and had the healthiest lunch on the trip.  Sue, the owner, was very helpful.  She and her clientele came out and looked at the Harley.

Entering Oklahoma, the sign read "Oklahoma, Native America".  This reminded me of the 'Trail of Tears" and all that the American Indian had to endure.  It was desolate.  The result of the ever changing relationship between Washington D.C. and the American Indian.

I was fried by the time I arrived in Stillwater, OK, home of OSU.  The town was dead.  When school is out, it is hard to find a single soul.  Mexican food for dinner and an early bedtime.
