Take It To The Limit: Stillwater OK to Limon CO
I-35/135 from Stillwater OK to Salina, KS. Took a left - I-70 all the way to Limon, CO. This route did not tax GPS abilities.
A few hours in the morning and I was in Kansas, When I took a left onto I-70, heading West, I was hit with very strong winds from the South. I had to adjust big time. My plan was to take an overnight stop in Hays, KS. The problem was I was concerned about the winds and was not sure I would make it to Hays by end of day.
Miracle of miracles, I arrived in Hays at about 1 pm. Had lunch at Pheasant Run .... a small old small wood building located right in the middle of modern chain restaurants. It was great - and the people there were a blast from the 1950's. I was told that Hays is a old German/Catholic settlement in the Midwest. It was recommended that, once I get to Colorado, I should visit Greeley, Co and go to Schwartz's Krautburger. I will probably not maker it there, but always good to know about these kind of things. Be prepared!
I decided to continue my journey. If it was 2 pm when I finished lunch, that was really 1 pm Mountain Time starting somewhere in Western Kansas. Way too soon to stop riding. So, I pushed it and ended up in Colorado as I was talking with my son, Daniel, via my helmet's Bluetooth set up. I was shocked - I had no idea how close I was to the Colorado line. I was elated. That was at 4 pm. I then arrived in Limon, CO, got a room at a Comfort Inn that was right next to Oscar's Bar & Grill. Billions of motorcycles headed to Sturgis, SD for the rally. So, many fine conversations at the bar.
I remembered a good friend, Ben, from the 70's that was from Hugo, CO, near Limon. I asked the bartender if he knew of Ben. He and many folks in the bar area knew of him and his family's huge ranch outsider of Hugo. How often do you find that in America these days? I am talking about many people in the room knew of him. That is a small town for you.
It was interesting that the guy sitting next to me at Oscars decried the fact that Colorado has legalized recreational marijuana. He said that this fact has ruined the State of Colorado. He initially thought that I would ask him where the closest dispensary was located. He hears that question a lot! He was relieved that I was making an inquiry about Ben. He said he can't find help because workers are going into the marijuana business. He said legalized marijuana is bringing the wrong people into the state.
In any event, I emailed Ben from the bar. He immediately called back - we set up a time in a couple days to meet in Denver for breakfast. It was truly great to reconnect.
I could tell that I had entered Colorado. The plains are different than any other state - just so beautiful. I was at a high elevation, so the clouds looked different. I am definitely a Colorado person. I had lived in Colorado for many years - and although the traffic now really really sucks, and although it has grown way too much, I still love the air, the altitude, and the attitude of people in the State.
Tomorrow will be a 1.5 hour ride to Boulder, CO to visit my son. My Harley and Me - in Colorado, how cool is that (for me anyway).
