Emptiness Tour 2021: Disappointed in Santa Fe, NM
The ride was beautiful from Taos to Santa Fe, NM.
But, I have to say, I was somewhat disappointed when I arrived in Santa Fe. I suppose it was because I remember it how it used to be (I know things have changed everywhere over the last 30 years). The Square used to be airy with merchants selling turquoise and Indian artifacts. Today, it is all high-priced spread; capitalizing on the wealthy shopper with homeless folks, buskers, trying to make a buck, in the background. Of course I only saw the superficial side of it all - a front meticulously sculpted for the private jet set.
I did benefit from the great restaurants. I had lunch and dinner at The Apothecary - great healthy food - mostly vegan. On the shelves were scented oils and crystals. Oxygen chairs lined the other wall. I did partake, but felt no different after the treatment.
Downstairs, next to the restaurant, was a crystals healing spa. I had a chance to talk with Mitch, who moved from New York to Santa Fe 40 years ago. We talked for about an hour. A most interesting guy - the only real bright spot during my stay.
The magic was mostly on my short ride to Santa Fe. Maybe if I had received a crystals treatment at the spa, I would have experienced more - but, that is for another time and another place.
Tomorrow was going to be the most thrilling adventure yet: hail, crazy roads, and meeting a person who would alter the trajectory of my trip. Stay tuned for some amazing stuff in my next post.
I feel the same, Robbie. I first visited Santa Fe and the surrounding area in the late '80's. I was fascinated by the people, the architecture, the town, and the culture.
ReplyDeleteLast year we spent a week there and it all seemed different. Overbuilt, too many tourists, and too commercialized. It reminds me of what happened to Boca after we graduated...
